 Why Butyl Tapes used in Sound and Accoustic Damping?



‘A rubber that absorbs a greater amount of energy is a better damper’, This is the principle of noise, vibration and harshness reduction and cancellation using butyl tapes. Butyl Tapes from CENFUSE are high viscoelastic and it absorbs vibrations, noises, harshness by converting mechanical energy into heat energy in low level. When a vibration in the form of noise, shock, sudden impact (like a jerk in automotive) butyl tape absorbs and converts this into low heat acting as a absorber or an NVH shield.

CENFUSE tapes are made from Butyl Rubber, along with high viscosity polybutylene with high extending non toxic fillers which will keep the tape non curing and flexible. Due to its non curing property it stays highly viscous and never hardens or become brittle over time during the change in temperature. The tape is of high density and the same can be increased or decreased under tight lab conditions based on the customer requirements. The mastic or putty like nature and consistency helps the tape to fill irregular surfaces, the adhesive nature of the tape makes it easy to apply over the metal, plastic and composite structures. The tapes show a high surface adhesion to plastics, metal and composites without any special surface treatment and increase over time.

The material is kind of a self heal or self repairable type which fills or adjusts itself keeping the seal in between the surfaces where it has been installed and absorbs the vibrations, Noises, Shocks it gets. These tapes backed by an aluminum foil, plastic backing can be die cut as per the custom shape , or can be provided in pads or tape forms. These tapes known as acoustic sealant tapes due to the noise absorbing nature , known as NVH tapes due to their use in automotive for Noise, Vibration and Harshness damping , body shop sealant tapes due to its waterproofing, dust ingression and air sealing property which will be explained in a different article.
