Global Compliance Standards for Building Materials – Butyl Tapes, Mastics and Sealant Tapes

Butyl Tapes/ Bead Mastics/ Roofing sealant Tapes/ Rope Sealant Tapes are widely used in roofing, façade, HVAC, waterproofing, cable sealing applications. The Major role of tapes are in waterproofing, moisture sealing by creating a tight flexible impermeable seal in non-uniform structures where seal gaps vary, and different material structures like metal to metal, metal to concrete etc.

The tapes also differ like

-Butyl tapes with different backings like aluminum, polyester, woven or non woven material, paper backed

-Double sided tape with or without reinforcement with silicone coated paper

-Butyl putty sealant tape also called butyl rope sealant tape

-Specialty Bead Mastics or Butyl tapes custom manufactured with special fillers, colors, polymer mixes for specific applications.

This article explores the industry standards and certifications based on which the CENFUSE tapes have designed, manufactured and used.

Dimensions

We use inline measuring systems, high precision verniers, automatic measurement cutting systems to keep the size of the tape with tight tolerances as per ISO, IS, DIN standards.

Color

We Formulate color according to the customer but we have tapes in all standard colors. For Construction or Building Related standards the preferred colors are Off white, Grey, Black.

Specific Gravity

ASTM D792,DIN EN ISO 1183, IS 13360 – Specific gravity denotes the weight of the tapes and also the solid contents used as the ingredient in these tapes, We have a digital density meter based on the ASTM, IS standard which is used to check each batch of mixed material, raw materials that too multiple samples from the same mix denotes the homogeneity of the mixture.

Peel Adhesion

ASTM D3330, ISO 29862, DIN EN 1939- Peel Adhesion 180/90 degree covers the critical property of the material and how strong it adheres to the surface, the higher the peel strength the higher the tackiness of the tape to the surface, if the butyl tape have a low value in ASTM D 3330 the tape can gradually peel off or will not stick properly, we have inhouse testing facility like a peel adhesion tester with different fixtures to test peel adhesion in different conditions. Our tapes extend good peel adhesion to GALVALUME, Anodized Aluminium, Mill finish Aluminium, Polyvinylidene Fluoride, PVC Plastisol, Polyester, Polycarbonate, Painted Metals, Glass, Wood etc

Adhesive Tensile Strength

ASTM C907, C908- This standard is used to test the tensile strength of the butyl sealant tape where the tape is applied over a surface and pulled apart where the force is measured, the results can be analyzed to know whether the failure is adhesive or cohesive. For sealant tapes these properties are very essential as it keeps the parts intact. We use our universal testing machine with special fixtures to record the tensile force created by the tapes. Along with that the elongation can also be recorded

Penetration

ASTM D217, ISO 2137, DIN 51804- The Butyl based or mastic sealant tapes we use in the buildings , PEBs, Construction does not cure and thus hardness cannot be mentioned, so the penetration test of the compounds is done to check the consistency, mix homogeneity, softness etc. This will keep the sealants fillable in the irregular gaps and surfaces. Each sealant tape for particular purpose has been given specific standard penetration and its checked as per the standard. We have needle, cone penetrometers with dial gauge and digital timer calibrated and handled by authorized person where each batch is tested and recorded.

Solid Content or Percentage of Solids

ASTM C 771- The material is weighed in a precision weighing balance and heated at 100 C for an hour in a air circulated oven and the weight taken again, if the weight seems to be the same the tape is a 100% solid tape with no volatile ingredients so that it will not lose its properties in the general operating temperatures or service temperatures. We have stainless steel lab ovens with standard blowers for air circulation

Flexibility

ASTM C 765- The low temperature flexibility of these sealants is a critical issue as the other rubber tapes became brittle during low temperature and results in cracking or causes air gaps which results in air leakage, water ingression and it destroys the purpose of the sealant tape.

Application, Service Temperature

The tapes usually are used, applied and ran on a temperature range of -40 C/F to 95 C or 200 F

Paintability, Fungus Test, Resistance to UV, minor chemicals

The Butyl Tape is paintable, it does not allow growth of fungus, resistant to minor chemicals filled water, sunlight and UV.

Air and Water Sealing

ASTM E1646 & E1680- These standards cover the sealing of the air and water but it helps in increasing the energy efficiency of a building, many global ratings or agencies often requires buildings with low E1680 ratings and sealant tapes or butyl-based mastic tapes from CENFUSE can help you achieve the same. In high temperature areas where a cooling system is used, and low temperature areas where a heating system is used the air leakages generate a large loss in energy and thus decreases the overall efficiency of the system increasing the energy/ fuel burnouts. The irregular gaps formed in the metal structure can be properly sealed with the tapes thus preventing air leakage and water ingression.

VOCs(Volatile Organic Compounds)

These include chemicals or volatiles which evaporates or escapes into air during change in temperature, prolonged time. Usually solvents, odor agents , chemicals that vaporizes constitutes VOCs. Our Butyl tape is made from 100 % solids and no solvents or volatiles are used. Even after heating at a temperature of 70-80 degree C for an hour the weight before and after does not change showing that the tape does not have any Volatile organic compounds. This helps in keeping the indoor air quality good and healthy.

ASTM Standards (ASTM stands for American Society for Testing and Materials developed in USA)

AAMA Standards (American Architectural Manufacturers Association)

ISO STANDARDS (International Organization for Standardization)

EN STANDARDS (European Standards)

IS/BIS STANDARDS (Bureau of Indian Standards)

UL(Underwriters Laboratory) & FM Global

DIN(Deutsches Institut für Normung)

CENFUSE Butyl Tapes are formulated, designed, manufactured based on all the above testing standards and that makes it suitable for achieving the global building ratings like Estidama, Mostadam, LEED, BREEAM, GSAS/QSAS, Green Globes etc.

Any Custom Sealant Tapes can be manufactured based on the customer requirement to seal anything in sustainability.
