Why detailed technical consultation needed before buying or choosing silicone insulation sleeves /conductor covers / Overhead line covers for your transmission, distribution project?
When we started Centroid Polymer with an idea of providing sealing solutions in rubber and plastics we had air, fluids, dust as the main medium to be sealed and our focus too was on the same. It was a casual visit with a customer drew our attention to electricity which is a critical item needed to be sealed or insulated with the use of technical material properties. The customer had some problems in sealing the high voltage installations, conductors, transformer and sub station accessories or reducing the induction in densely populated areas. The traditional ‘jugaads’ like ideas of using pvc pipes or other plastic sleeves to cover or insulate the sleeves turned to be futile.
We went
back to the work and then had a research on the same and seems to found out
that many multinational companies have developed solutions for the same but it
seems to be too costly or non affordable in the vast, dense distribution and
transmission sector of India. This resulted in developing an insulation sleeve
or conductor cover which when manufactured from electrically engineered
material becomes a good solution to insulation for high voltage
conductor/lines.
We started
with a simple model of silicone insulation sleeve which is known as press lock type
conductor cover which can be installed on the line without getting the line
down and can be installed without the help of the installation tool. This
sleeve insulates the conductor reduces the induction but not give a 100%
insulation if it is used without the accessories. The end sealing tapes, silicone self fusing tapes, silicone based high performance
sealants, silicone tags or cable ties are used in combination to achieve the
same. The installation video is share over here for an
understanding.
On the next
phase the customers faced difficulty in sealing the joints in between lines
which are actually of a higher dimension around double that of the normal line,
also the jumpers too with dimension changes. Here we introduced silicone self locking sleeves which also can be locked without
any tool for smaller lengths and also can be locked with tool for larger
lengths. Installation video can be watched over here for an
idea on the product.
Moving
forward after a period of time some customers were reporting issues of the
sleeve getting open, fire incidents due to leakage, thus we moved into a model
called double
lock conductor cover where a double protection is given from getting it
open and arresting the leakage. A number of designs where developed, designed,
extruded and have tested on the line in the lab for power frequency voltage
test and have been supplied to the customer. This particular model also had
been supplied with an installation instruction, tool and sealing accessories to
make the installation and insulation successful.
The above
details gives the evolution of silicone conductor cover/ insulation
sleeve started for
an electrical sealing and how it have evolved over time. We have different kind
of materials for the same like fire retardant, high tensile, high tear, low
smoke, halogen free, thermal conductive, highly electrical insulating each
tested improved on our internal laboratories and types tested on IRMRI, CPRI
etc.
A
distribution, transmission line along with its multiple substations contains
numerous equipment, jumpers, connections, joints , CTs, PTs, bushings, clamps,
arrestors, junctions which needs to be properly insulated. A challenge faced by
the industry is the unstandardized sizes of these terminations, connections,
joints , clamps where separate molded
products or custom molded products to be used. We have a solution for this
with our formed guards or covers which can be used to insulate all irregular, unstandardized
sizes without any wastage. But the installation requires proper tools,
technical training, special accessories which Centroid provides.
We have a
complete electrical and
mechanical testing lab in house where you could test the mechanical,
electrical, fire properties of the final product and the raw material used to
manufacture the same.
Whenever
you face electrical faults, interruptions
due to wildlife, vegetation and you plan to insulate over you need to
take a total consultation of the distribution/transmission network rather than
buying sleeves in length. This needs a set of different sleeves, accessories,
guards, covers, installation tools, self
fusing tapes to completely insulate and bring down the induction level
under safety limits. Manufacturing these silicone sleeves like a regular
profile and installing it like a precautionary product without proper
consultation and tools will not bring any effect and is a waste of resources
and time.
As a
pioneer in the field of sleeves and being a supplier to major State utilities,
Powergrid, PSUs, Renewable power generation companies we provide a consultation
and estimation for your insulation needs along with a installation support
which makes us stand different from all the other manufacturers.
Our
experiences on the site installations, changes we adopted will be shared over
here in the coming sessions.
